ARSENAL TV The launch of Arsenal TV'It's an opportunity to go behind the scenes'Arsenal TV launched in style at Emirates Stadium on Monday afternoon with a special Arsenal Question Time hosted by Des Lynam.
We caught up with Lynam and special guests Ray Parlour, Martin Keown and comedian Matt Lucas before the event kicked off. Here's what they had to say about Arsenal and the Club's new venture.
Arsenal TV is now live - running from 5pm, Monday to Friday.
DES LYNAM, PRESENTER "We have a fantastic panel and some fantastic questions from people. I have never been to Emirates Stadium before so I am having a good look around. It's brilliant isn’t it, fantastic! I think it’s the kind of thing we need at Brighton but it will take a little while! I worked with BBC Radio Brighton when it started; I dread to think how long ago, in 1968, so that is where I started my broadcasting career. But I love the way Arsenal play. They play the best football, the nicest football, the most cultured football, as you would expect from the coach they have got. Fabregas is the great player for me. A cultured player and I enjoy watching him. But I enjoy watching the team as a whole. We will have a lot of fun today."
RAY PARLOUR "Arsenal TV is good for the young players, it gives them coverage and I am sure a lot of people will tune in to watch them. Maybe it is a bit more pressure on them but that comes with football and they have to get used to that. It will be great for them and the profiles should go off. I signed for Arsenal when I was a young kid, 12 years old. Then you do your two days training and when you get to 14 you sign your schoolboy forms and then at 16 is when you sign apprentice forms and from then it's hard work to get in the team and luckily I was in the team for 14 years. Football has changed from when I was a young kid. We had duties, had to clean the dressing rooms, clean the boots. They live more a life of luxury which sometimes is good for them so that they can concentrate on the football but then sometimes I worry about the character of these young kids because they don’t do day-to-day hard work. When I did it, I would leave my house at six in the morning, get on the Tube down to Arsenal, and sort the kit out for the first team. You reap your rewards and it makes you work harder to get where you want to be.."
MARTIN KEOWN "Arsenal TV is an early opportunity for the fans see what they do behind the scenes and for some young aspiring footballers it gives them an opportunity to see what is involved. The youngsters at the Club do a lot of training, they are in earlier than the rest of the group and they train in the afternoon. For the apprentices it is a long road and once you become a pro it gets easier but you still have to work hard every day. Then there is the media side. I was lucky when I first started to play, away from here at Aston Villa. I think I became like a spokesman for the club. I did a lot of local radio and TV channels so that sharpened my media skills, knowing what not to say, visualising the headlines because the papers will make something out of everything you say so you have to be very careful about the message you put out."
MATT LUCAS, COMEDIAN "They asked me to do a warm-up [for the Arsenal Question Time]. I have never done that so I have thought of a couple of jokes, a bit rude, but you won’t see them on TV. Then I will be sitting down on the panel with Arsene Wenger. I don’t think I can enlighten anything he has to say but it is nice to sit down with a cup of tea. I have met the manager really, really briefly for about eight seconds at Lee Dixon’s testimonial dinner about 10 years ago, so I am sure he will remember me! What would I ask Wenger? Should I get my kit on and get on there? Probably play in midfield, Fabregas looks a bit tired. Should I start or wait until the second half? I first came to watch Arsenal in 1981 when I was seven but I have been a regular since I was about 12. I was a Junior Gunner but I used to fake my application and say I was slightly younger than I was so I could be a Junior Gunner a little bit longer!"
